Catherine Downey, N.D. Dr. Catherine Downey began her journey as a Naturopathic Physician and Midwife
in 1975. After graduating from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in 1979, and finishing her residency in
family naturopathic medicine in 1980, she moved to Kauai, Hawaii and began her family practice and practiced as a home birth
midwife. For over 31 years she has served the Kauai community and is a well known talk radio host for Kauai Community Radio.
Currently Dr. Downey is working at NCNM as the Associate Dean of Academic Progress in Portland, Oregon as well as being
Tutu to her grandson Adrian. Her work at NCNM is centered around supporting the students of all the professional and medical
programs in their academic success through individual advising, supporting the full time faculty advisors, supporting the
work of the deans of all the programs as well as working with the provost to enhance the retention of enrolled students.
In
Dr. Downey's private practice her emphasis is on helping patients in their journey towards ultimate health by empowering them
in their own healing. She uses herbal medicines, nutrition, homeopathy, life style changes and health counseling and holds
the vision of health for the patient until they are fully empowered to know if for themselves. By treating the root cause
of illness, healing is possible.
Dr. Downey bikes to work each day, is working on her memoir, is learning
the ukulele and has an urban garden. She will begin other work in naturopathic medicine soon. That work includes mentoring
new naturopathic doctors, seeing more private patients and continuing her work at NCNM as well as being a support to her daughters'
young families.
